Yikes & Vacation

I cannot believe it's been a month since my last post! (That would be the "yikes" part of the title). It's not that I want to abandon my blog, it's just that with one dog and two people and pretty ordinary lives, how much is there to write about? If you, the readers, have suggestions, please let me know! :D

The most exciting thing recently is that Mr D., Bella and I went on vacation. We went way far away from any civilization. 500 miles from NYC, a place called Aziscohos Lake, Maine. 40 miles southeast is the closest cell phone reception availability, so when we told people from work that we were on vacation and not reachable by cell phone or email, we really meant it.

My family built a "camp" there in 1966 and although I used to go up fairly often when I was younger, I haven't been there since 1992! I use "camp" loosely - it's a solidly built 3-bedroom house. No electricity (lights and stove are on propane) and no running water (other than the hand pump at the kitchen sink which pulls from the lake).

Of course - the interior hasn't changed since 1966, either!

Bella wasn't too sure about being an outdoorsy adventure dog

But she was really, really good at finding sunshine to snooze in.

"Camp" from the water

It was rare to see/hear more than two motorboats in a day, which made these sunsets even more peaceful.

Bella was great on this trip. We stayed in three different homes - with a friend on Saturday night before going up to camp on Sunday; at camp for several nights and then with a family member on night on the way home to NYC. Camp really kind of disoriented her, I think. Well, probably all of us, to be honest. Because there is absolutely no ambient light up there, it is absolute dark. You can not see a THING unless you switch on a flashlight. The wildlife noises, after the noises of the city, were a little disconcerting.

Regardless, Bella was really great the whole time. We bring her crate with us when we travel, when possible, but at camp she was more comfortable and happier when she could sleep on our bed. Normally she's on and off the bed too much and disturbs us, but when we travel together it's almost as though she liked the comfort of being able to snuggle up to us at night.

Good job Bella - a city dog adapting to country life, at least for a few days.

A few moments of quiet on the lake....

It looks like a beautiful place! Bella does look a little confused in one photo, but I bet she enjoyed it, too.
